Shellfish Hatchery Technician - Peeko Oysters
Peeko Oysters has a full-time, salaried Hatchery Technician position available.
Job Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for the following:
● Learn and familiarize themselves with all aspects of shellfish cultivation from algae cultivation to large seed nursery systems and everything in between. A more comprehensive explanation will be provided during a walk through introduction before a job offer is made.
● Concentrated training in algae cultivation from stock culture maintenance to mass culture production using a SeaCAPS cultivation system. Develop competency in all aspects of algae production including ensuring that there is adequate feed for shellfish during all life cycle phases in the hatchery. Regularly monitoring algae cultures to ensure purity and determine cell concentration.
● Concentrated training in post-set production in both the hatchery and land-based nursery system. Regularly inspect animals for health, determine feeding requirements and stocking densities after screening for small post-set in the hatchery. Determine stocking density after screening for post-set in the land-based nursery. Monitor natural algae production. Ensure the FLUPSY system manager receives adequate and healthy seed.
● Learn to recognize when production levels are in line with production goals and when algae and seed production may be impacted by poor water quality or other threats to the algae cultures and animal health.
Experience/Education:
● Prefer a minimum of one year’s experience in shellfish cultivation in a hatchery setting. ● Prefer four years of college education in a marine science curriculum.
Additional job requirements:
● Comfortable working long hours (10+) during the height of the production season as well as weekends on a rotational schedule. Applicant would need to work some holidays as needed during the season.
● Ability to meet local travel demands of the company.
● Able to lift 50 pounds
● Clean and current driver’s license
Preferred skills:
● experience in a lab setting
● Record keeping
● Good communication skills
● Comfortable with microscopic inspection of algae, larvae and post-set
● Computer/mobile application skills
● Basic plumbing and construction skills
● Ability to work in a small tight knit team environment
Compensation
● Competitive salary of $55,000, commensurate with experience and education
● Participation in healthcare plan with 80% of premium cost covered after six month probationary period
